5 reasons to get the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

Time is running out to get the highest-ever sign-up bonus for the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. Unlike many other travel bloggers who get paid to promote cards like this, I don’t.

I just love this credit card.

If you’re unfamiliar, IHG is the brand for Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, Kimpton, Crown Plaza, and Staybridge Suites among others.

There are many reasons to have hotel credit cards in your wallet, but the new IHG card is one that is great. In full disclosure, I don’t currently have this card due to Chase 5/24 rules, but it’s first on my list to get. I have the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card which is no longer available for new applications.

1. Sign-up bonus of 120,000

New cardholders will earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. Cardholders will then earn an additional 40,000 bonus points after you spending a total of $5,000 on purchases in the first 6 months.

I got the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card years ago when the sign-up bonus was just 80,000 points. Most recently, the sign-up bonus for the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card was 100,000 points. The offer is reportedly good through the end of the month.

The annual fee for this card is $89, which is not waived for the first year, but cardholders should be able to get value out of this card thanks to the annual night certificate.

The best part is you can transfer points to IHG from Chase in order to top off your balance. So if you have cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred, you could really take advantage of the IHG program.

2. Annual Night Certificate

After the first year, cardholders will receive an annual free night certificate at hotels that cost 40,000 points or less. It’s not “free” because you are paying $89 a year for it (with the credit card annual fee), but paying just $89 for a night in a hotel is a great value most of the time. Here are some of the properties you could redeem your free night at:

  • Crowne Plaza London – Kings Cross – 40,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo Denver Downtown – 30,000 points
  • Holiday Inn Express Chicago – Magnificent Mile – 40,000 points
  • Holiday Inn & Suites Nashville Downtown – Convention Center – 40,000 points
  • InterContinental Hotels: Fiji Golf Resort & Spa – 40,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo London – Kensington – 40,000 points
Cardholders can redeem their IHG credit card annual free night at the InterContinental Hotels: Fiji Golf Resort & Spa.

3. 4th Night Free

This is a really underrated benefit of the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. For award stays, your fourth night will be free. What does this mean? Pay for three night with points, you can stay a fourth night for absolutely nothing. It’s pretty simple, and it can be very lucrative.

If you were to cash in points for three nights at the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam, you could get a fourth night for free.

4. Credit for Global Entry/TSA PreCheck

Similar to the Chase Sapphire Reserve and American Express Platinum cards, this card comes with a statement credit for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck once every four years.

Even if you already have Global Entry or TSA PreCheck from another credit card, you can gift this to family or friends by purchasing it for them. As long as you use this card, you will still get the statement credit. The cardholder doesn’t have to be the person that gets the benefit.

5. Eligible with the old IHG card

Even if you have the now-defunct IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card, you are still eligible to get the new IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. You can have two annual nights for just $138 ($49 for the Select, $89 for the Premier). That’s a great value. That’s a weekend away with free lodging at an IHG property of 40,000 points or less.

Final Thoughts

While I prefer Hyatt to IHG because of the cheaper point redemption options, having the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is worth it due to the annual free night. The all-time high sign-up bonus of 120,000 points makes it ever sweeter.

While redemptions for free nights at IHG properties range from 10,000 to 70,0000, which is more than Hyatt, there are some good values especially considering the fourth free night benefit.
