Chase announced the Q4 Freedom categories – department stores, PayPal and Chase Pay will be the keys to earning 5x Ultimate Rewards.
The Chase Freedom card is a great card for everyday people to earn points because of the quarterly 5x Ultimate Reward bonus points. This card is one of the easiest ways to earn a lot of points quickly.
Cardholders will earn 5x the amount of points when used at department stores, PayPal and Chase Pay stores up to $1,500 from October through the end of the year.
The PayPal promotion is one of my favorites since there are so many options to take advantage. While normal category bonuses are fine, PayPal is a great way to earn 5x on points that typically don’t earn a bonus.
By December 15, activate your account here. Please note that you must activate this before you can start earning 5x points on these categories.

The Chase Trifecta
The Chase Trifecta is an important and powerful key to earning Ultimate Rewards. Pairing the Freedom with a Chase Sapphire (Preferred or Reserve) card and one or both of the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited Card is even more powerful.
The Freedom (5x on quarterly rotating categories) and Freedom Unlimited (1.5x on every purchase) are both cash-back cards. However, when a cardholder has a Chase Sapphire card, the cash back credits can transfer to become Ultimate Rewards.
The nice thing about the Chase Q4 categories is that they fall right around the holidays so purchasing gifts can help max out the limit.
While it’s hard to max out the $1,500 limit with many categories for the everyday person, the ability to earn 5x on PayPal and department stores around the holidays definitely makes it more doable.
If you have to make any big purchases, try to make it at an online store that takes PayPal, a department store, on in a rare case, Chase Pay.
I’ve always tried to take maximum advantage of the 5x bonus categories. The Q4 categories allow cardholders to earn points on purchases that typically do not earn bonus points. Take advantage of online stores that allow shoppers to use PayPal.
Because I value Chase Ultimate Rewards so highly, this is always a promotion that I focus on maximizing.
