Amex Gold Card adds 4x for restaurants worldwide

American Express is now offering 4x points on all restaurants around the world.

American Express has made one of the best cards for everyday people even better by adding the 4x restaurant bonus for restaurants around the world.

Previously, the American Express Gold Card awarded just 4x points for US Restaurants.

American Express Gold Card Basics

Due to the earning structure of bonus spending for supermarkets and restaurants (4x), this card is great for people to earn points through everyday spending.

  • Earn 35,000 bonus after spending $2,000 in three months of being approved for the card.
  • $250 (not waived for the first year)
  • 4x points on US supermarkets and restaurants (including worldwide restaurants on June 6, 2019) up to $25,000 per calendar year; 3x on flights booked with airline or; 1x on everything else back on all purchases
  • $100 airline fee credit; monthly cash-back statements with Seamless, Grubhub, etc.
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • NerdWallet suggests a needed credit score above 690 to be approved for this card

Worldwide 4x Restaurant Bonus

Beginning June 6, 2019, American Express will reward 4x Membership Rewards points for all restaurant purchases.

This is going to affect you if you travel internationally, but not earning points in international restaurants was always something I didn’t appreciate about this card.

Nevertheless, American Express taking off this restriction is a good thing.

Final Thoughts

The American Express Gold Card is one of my favorite cards. I put roughly half of my monthly spending on this card thanks to groceries and restaurants. I’ve even had American Express Offers that reward additional points at purchases at the grocery store, Trader Joes. The only negative to American Express is that it’s not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard.

American Express Membership Rewards are a really valuable transferable point thanks to their 22 transfer partners.
