Chase announced the Q3 Freedom categories. For better or worse, gas stations will repeat to go along with streaming services.
The Chase Freedom card is a great card for everyday people to earn points because of the quarterly 5x Ultimate Reward bonus points. The card, part of the Chase Trifecta, is one of the easiest ways to earn a lot of points quickly.
Cardholders will earn 5x the amount of points at gas stations and online streaming services stores up to $1,500 from July through September.
Chase lists streaming services to include Apple Music, Hulu, Netflix, Pandora, SiriusXM, Sling, Spotify, Vudu, but I imagine this will also include non-listed services like YouTube TV.
I do love how the gas promotion lines up in the summer when many families will be taking to the road on summer vacations. Be sure you’re using your Chase Freedom card for gas purchases!
Starting June 15, activate your account here. Please note that you must activate this before you can start earning 5x points at the gas stations and streaming services.
Chase Freedom Bonus Categories for 2019
Q1 (Jan. 1 - March 31)
Gas stations, tolls and drugstores
Q2 (April 1 - June 30)
Home improvement stores and grocery stores
Q3 (July 1 - Sept. 30)
Gas stations and streaming services
Q4 (Oct. 1 - Dec. 31)
The Chase Trifecta
The Chase Trifecta is an important and powerful key to earning Ultimate Rewards. Pairing the Freedom with a Chase Sapphire (Preferred or Reserve) card and one or both of the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited Card is even more powerful.
The Freedom (5x on quarterly rotating categories) and Freedom Unlimited (1.5x on every purchase) are both cash-back cards. However, when a cardholder has a Chase Sapphire card, the cash back credits can transfer to become Ultimate Rewards.
When the quarterly categories are grocery stores, you should always be maxing out the quarterly $1,500 limit. This will net you 7,500 Ultimate Rewards.
If don’t typically spend $1,500 over three months at the gas station or streaming services, you still have an option: gift cards.
Some gas stations do sell gift cards that you could purchase this month to use for other services or in later months. You’re essentially pre-paying for your groceries or restaurants, but instead of earning 1.5x points (if you have the Freedom Unlimited card), you’re essentially earning 5x points.
You should only be buying gift cards at places you already were planing to spend money at.
I’ve always tried to take maximum advantage of the 5x bonus categories. While the Q3 Freedom categories aren’t as lucrative as the second quarter (grocery stores), it’s still not bad! If you don’t have cable and stream, you probably will spend a few hundred dollars during this time period.
Because I value Chase Ultimate Rewards so highly, this is always a promotion that I focus on maximizing.
