Chase Freedom is one of the best credit cards for specific bonus categories.

The Chase Freedom card is a great card for everyday people to earn points because of the quarterly 5x Ultimate Reward bonus points. The card, part of the Chase Trifecta, is one of the easiest ways to earn a lot of points quickly.

Cardholders will earn 5x the amount of points at grocery and home improvement stores up to $1,500 from April through the end of June. Everyone spends money at grocery stores so this should be an easy one to earn on.

The Chase Trifecta

The Chase Trifecta is an important and powerful key to earning Ultimate Rewards. Pairing the Freedom with a Chase Sapphire (Preferred or Reserve) card and one or both of the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited Card is even more powerful.

The Freedom (5x on quarterly rotating categories) and Freedom Unlimited (1.5x on every purchase) are both cash-back cards. However, when a cardholder has a Chase Sapphire card, the cash back credits can transfer to become Ultimate Rewards.

Chase Ultimate Rewards are our favorite type of transferable points because of its 13 transfer partners. In fact, Chase Ultimate Rewards were how I booked a honeymoon for free to Jamaica.

How to max out the category

When the quarterly categories are grocery stores, you should always be maxing out the quarterly $1,500 limit. This will net you 7,500 Ultimate Rewards.

If don’t typically spend $1,500 over three months at a grocery store, you still have an option: gift cards.

No, this isn’t a shopping spree.

Buy gift cards to your grocery store or restaurant and use them in the following months. You’re essentially pre-paying for your groceries or restaurants, but instead of earning 1.5x points (if you have the Freedom Unlimited card), you’re essentially earning 5x points.

You should only be buying gift cards at places you already were planing to spend money at.

Final Thoughts

I’ve always tried to take maximum advantage of the 5x bonus categories. When the Chase Freedom Q2 bonus categories were revealed, I knew that it would be an opportunity to earn serious points.

Because I value Chase Ultimate Rewards so highly, this is always a promotion that I focus on maximizing.
